Animals were not used for multiple experiments as two of the three experiments were non-survival (due to the blood collection following DMRS and the urethane anesthesia used for fMRI) and incompatible (DMRS and PET both required labeled glucose injection, the DMRS and fMRI signals may interfere with each other, and fMRI required different anesthesia than the other two experiments)
This variability is influenced by differences in the permeability of the bloodbrain barrier (BBB) and the bloodcerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier, as well as by region-specific expression of enzymes involved in glutathione metabolism
Despite these hurdles, the study highlights BPC 157 as a highly promising but still experimental therapy that requires more research, especially in humans, before it can be widely recommended for medical use
