In 1857, Marshal Randon secured a decisive victory in northern Algeria over remaining rebel forces that continued resisting even after the surrender of their leader, the famous 'Abd al Qadir al Jaza'iri. In the aftermath, the Governor General of Algeria commissioned a series of medals bearing Arabic inscriptions, which were distributed among the local population. This
