I tried a few different methods including pushing the white tab up with a screwdriver but in the end used some long nose pliers to grip the edge of the metal rim of the lighter socket (being careful to avoid damaging the plastic light transmitter around it) and tried to twist it in the recommended direction while pushing at the white plastic tab with a screwdriver but eventually, out of exasperation and determination, I just pulled and wriggled it vigorously with the long nose pliers until it came out suddenly (fortunately I had disconnected the light bulb fitting and main lead beforehand otherwise it might have ripped out and damaged the light bulb wiring)
